CanWEA Launches 23rd Annual Conference and Trade Show
Quebec City, Quebec - Monday, October 01, 2007 The Canadian Wind Energy Association launched its 23rd Annual Conference and Trade show - to-date, its largest by far.
At this morning’s opening plenary Quebec Minister of Natural Resources and Wildlife, the Honourable Claude Béchard, underscored Quebec’s commitment to developing renewable energy. The Minister spoke specifically about Quebec’s unique ability to integrate wind energy because of the complementary nature of the province’s significant hydroelectric generation. He stressed Quebec’s goal of installing 4000 MW of wind energy by the year 2015, representing of 40% of Canada’s installed wind energy capacity in that year, making it Canada’s wind energy leader.
Nationally, it has also been another good year for the wind energy industry setting it on a path to achieving a minimum of 12,000 MW of wind energy by 2016. That’s enough energy to meet 5.1% of Canada’s total electricity demand and supply power for 3.6 million Canadian homes.
Tomorrow morning The Honourable Gary Lunn, Federal Minister of Natural Resources wraps up the opening plenary with a keynote address updating delegates on the 1.48 billion ecoEnergy for Renewable Power program (ERP).
Throughout the afternoon, delegates will participate in discussions on issues such as: wind energy forecasting, policy developments across Canada and challenges and opportunities surrounding wind farm siting.
The day draws to a close with a keynote speech on wind energy’s role in addressing climate change by Steven Sawyer, Secretary General of the Global Wind Energy Council.
