Wind and water organizations encouraged by emphasis on renewables
(OTTAWA ON.) - September 18, 2008 – The Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) and the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) are encouraged by an initiative to conduct a scoped review of the enhancement and acceleration of the province’s renewable energy potential, announced today by the Honourable George Smitherman, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure.
Minister Smitherman has issued a directive to the Ontario Power Authority, with a requirement that the review be completed within six months.
Robert Hornung, President of the Canadian Wind Energy Association said “CanWEA has been an active participant in the Integrated Power System Plan (IPSP) and related Ontario Energy Board processes. I am confident that this focused review will provide value to these undertakings and help to accelerate the uptake of renewable resources into the provincial energy mix.”
Paul Norris, President of the Ontario Waterpower Association added “I am particularly pleased with the recognition that enabling transmission is critical to the achievement of our renewable energy targets. This review should also improve the integration of the array of policy and processes related to new renewable energy development.”
CanWEA and the OWA are collaborating at the IPSP Hearing, currently before the Ontario Energy Board. Both organizations will continue to work with the Ontario Power Authority, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and other parties to contribute to the achievement of the province’s renewable energy and climate change objectives.
The Ontario Waterpower Association was formed in May 2001 and represents more than 95% of Ontario waterpower producers. Waterpower is clean, renewable and accounts for more than one quarter of Ontario's energy mix. It is of critical importance in responding to daily and weekly changes in demand.
CanWEA is Canada’s national association for the wind energy industry with more than 380 members including wind turbine manufacturers and component suppliers, wind energy project developers, owners and operators, and a broad range of service providers to the wind energy industry.
