08/12/2008    Wind and Aboriginal Communities Seminar

Wind and Aboriginal Communities Seminar to explore opportunities in growing wind energy industry

(OTTAWA ON.) The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) will hold its first-ever Wind and Aboriginal Communities Seminar, Sept. 11 – 12 in Ottawa, as part of the association’s efforts to promote opportunities available in wind energy in Canada. Wind is one of the fastest-growing sources of clean, renewable energy around the world.

The seminar is one in a series of educational sessions the association has hosted this year on various topics such as financing and siting of wind development projects. The Wind Matters series is sponsored by SkyPower, Vestas, and Shell Canada. CanWEA has plans to increase the number of seminars it offers in 2009.

“With this session we aim to increase the dialogue and information sharing between representatives of Aboriginal communities and the wind energy industry in Canada,” says Robert Hornung, president of CanWEA. “The seminar will include a review of case studies, aboriginal community partnership models, breakout sessions on regional issues, and discussion on resources that can aid aboriginal communities in developing wind energy projects.”

The seminar will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 101 Lyon Street, Ottawa. The session will be of particular interest to: representatives of Aboriginal communities interested in the development of wind projects on their lands, either as project partners or direct investors; representatives of the development community interested in exploring the nature of the relationship, the duty to consult, and the priorities of Aboriginals in the project development process; representatives of federal, provincial and territorial governments; utilities and regulatory officials involved in Aboriginal development; and interested members of the media.

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is a non-profit trade association that promotes the appropriate development and application of all aspects of wind energy in Canada, including the creation of a suitable policy environment.
