Wind Energy: A Strategic Source of Electrical Power for the Development of Quebec and its Regions
Montreal, May 5, 2008 - The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) applauds the announcement of 15 new wind farms, and considers it an unprecedented step for the growth of wind power in Quebec, and for environmental protection. CanWEA believes that this very good news is a harbinger of a bright future for the development of Quebec society and its regions.
“The existence of global warming is no longer a matter of debate, and electricity is seen as a source of energy for the future. This makes wind-generated electrical power very promising. We are pleased that Quebec is promoting the expansion of this method of power generation,” says Sean Whittaker, CanWEA’s Vice-President, Policy. “We would, of course, like to congratulate the winners – but we would also like to thank the communities and regions that will welcome these projects. Without them, it would be impossible to produce wind energy. These communities are directly contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gasses and to the development of an energy source that can meet Quebec’s growing demand for power.”
It goes without saying that these 15 wind farms will be developed with respect for their communities, and in accordance with current laws and regulations. The members of CanWEA’s Quebec Caucus adhere to a Declaration of Principles that clearly outlines how this can be achieved. The Quebec Caucus members have made a commitment to listen to the concerns of communities and to take them into account; to be transparent in their actions by informing communities about the development of projects within a reasonable period of time; and to promote projects that respect the environment, fauna, flora, the landscape, and those living near the developments.
CanWEA is the voice of the wind power industry in Canada. It works on behalf of its 350 members to facilitate and promote the responsible and sustainable growth of wind energy across the country. Wind energy is an important component of Canada’s energy future, bringing new investment and employment while decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.
