Newly Created Energy Industry Network Calls for More Renewables to Fight Air Pollution and Climate Change
Ottawa, June 11th, 2007 – Four national industry associations that represent the geothermal, hydropower, solar, and wind industries today announced the creation of the Canadian Renewable Energy Industry Network (CREIN). Its mission is to promote the sustainable development of renewable sources of energy for the benefit of all Canadians, and CREIN members will work together to advocate for a much greater role
for renewable energy in the Federal Government’s response to air pollution and climate change.
While Canada currently meets 17 percent of its primary energy supply and over 60 percent of its electricity needs with renewables, this only represents a fraction of the country’s enormous potential for increased development of mature and emerging renewable technologies.
The Federal Government is now consulting on the details of its Regulatory Framework for Air Emissions and CREIN members will actively collaborate in this process to ensure that renewable energy is an important element of the Government’s strategy. Specifically, CREIN is seeking to ensure that renewable energies be allowed to participate in any future emissions trading systems through the creation of offsets, that any technology fund support the deployment of renewable energies and that past efforts to deploy renewable energies are recognized and credited.
Renewable sources of energy provide major ecological, economic, and social advantages. They are the solution to meeting our energy needs, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and controlling air pollution. And because they are renewable, the benefits are handed across generations.
By further developing this potential, Canada can preserve its traditional role as a world- leader in clean renewable energy, while addressing air pollution and climate change concerns. Increased use of renewables also stimulates economic growth and job creation in a wide range of sectors such as research, manufacturing, and installation.
The four associations working together as CREIN are: the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC), the Canadian Hydropower Association (CHA), the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA), and the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA).
