05/10/2013   AQPER and CanWEA are pleased with the Quebec Government’s commitment to wind energy

MONTREAL, May 10, 2013 – The Association québécoise de la production de l’énergie renouvelable (AQPER) and the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) are pleased with the government’s interest in wind energy and the strong commitment it is making to Quebec’s wind energy sector.

Ottawa, Ontario, April 24 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) welcomes the April 22, 2013 judgment of Madam Justice S.E. Healey of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. In the decision the Court dismissed a lawsuit by landowners seeking damages because, the landowners claimed, a proposed Ontario wind development reduced their property values.  

Ottawa, Ontario – April 24, 2013 -- Ontario's 41st annual Air Quality Report shows levels of many air pollutants have dropped across the province and Ontario's air quality continues to improve, thanks in great part to the replacement of dirty coal with clean energy such as wind.

QUÉBEC, April 23, 2013 – The uncertainty cannot continue for Quebec’s 5,000 wind energy workers. That was the message sent to Premier Pauline Marois by the many political and economic leaders who came to Québec from several of the province’s regions to demand that the government quickly solicit bids for at least 700 MW of wind energy, which would allow the wind energy sector to continue developing past 2015. The sector benefits the entire province, and in particular the communities that host and participate in wind energy projects.

Ottawa, Ontario, April 17 – Ontario farmers and landowners, rural communities and new college graduates could be left in the cold by the passing of a PC Party Private Member’s Bill which is scheduled for second reading debate in the Ontario Legislature tomorrow. The ‘Ensuring Affordable Energy Act’ (Bill 39), like several previous PC Party legislative proposals seeking a moratorium on wind energy development, is founded on the misperception that wind energy is responsible for increasing electricity costs in Ontario. Instead of reducing electricity costs, however, Bill 39 simply threatens future wind energy investment in Ontario at a time when wind energy projects are providing new job opportunities for Ontarians, enabling the construction of new manufacturing facilities, and providing an important new source of income to landowners and rural communities across the province.

Ottawa, Ontario, April 11, 2013 – Contrary to a Fraser Institute report released today titled “Environmental and Economic Consequences of Ontario's Green Energy Act”, wind energy has helped clean Ontario’s electricity system and deliver hundreds of millions of dollars to rural communities – with little additional cost passed on to ratepayers.

(Ottawa) March 28, 2013 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association congratulates the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) as a single wind turbine begins operations in Port Elgin, Ontario this week. The turbine is sited on the grounds of the union’s Family Education Centre (FEC) and will generate the equivalent of 50 to 60 per cent of the FEC's energy needs.

Ottawa, March 22, 2013 – A new clinical study out of Australia finds that so-called ''wind turbine sickness'' may actually be caused by the suggestion from anti-wind groups that turbines make people sick. The study found that 63 per cent of Australia's 49 wind farms had never been the subject of any health complaint from nearby residents. It also found 68 per cent of the 120 complaints that have been made came from residents living near wind farms heavily targeted by the anti-wind farm lobby, and that ''the advent of anti-wind farm groups beginning to foment concerns about health (from around 2009) was also strongly correlated with actual complaints being made."

The initiative is supported by wind energy leaders whose goal is to ensure Canadians have access to facts when making choices about their energy future, and the site is administered by the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA).

(OTTAWA) February 12, 2013 – The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) recently released its 2012 market statistics, showing continued expansion of the market, with global installed wind energy capacity increasing by 19 per cent in 2012 to 282,000 MW. Canada remains a global wind energy leader as it experienced the 9th largest increase in installed capacity in 2012 (936 MW).  Both China and the United States, the world’s wind energy leaders, installed more than 13,000 MW of new capacity in 2012.

Ottawa, February 8, 2013 – According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA),the documentary Wind Rush, presented on CBC’s Doc Zone February 7, 2013, requires clarification and fact-checks concerning wind energy development in Canada and around the world.

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) today expressed its concern with the Ontario Progressive Conservative party’s continued support for a Private Member's Motion put forward by MPP Lisa Thompson (Huron-Bruce) which calls for a moratorium on wind energy development until a third party health and environmental study has been completed. Such an action would put thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in new investments at risk -- and is not warranted based on the review of scientific evidence to date.

Ottawa, Ontario – January 10, 2013 – CanWEA today applauded Premier Dalton McGuinty’s announcement that Ontario will fully abandon coal-fired electricity a year ahead of schedule. The province has reduced use of coal by 90 per cent since 2003 while at the same time bringing online 2,000 MW of clean, emissions-free wind energy.

Ottawa, Ontario, November 15, 2012 – Much of the information contained in the recently published paper, "Effects of industrial wind turbine noise on sleep and health" by Michael A Nissenbaum, Jeffery J Aramini, and Christopher D Hanning (all directors/ scientific advisors for the Society for Wind Vigilance), was previously reviewed and considered by experts at the first Environmental Review Tribunal (Erikson v. MOE 2011) hearing on wind energy in Ontario and in the Queen's Bench of Saskatchewan case McKinnon v. Martin (Red Lily Legal Case in 2010).

Toronto, ONTARIO - October 15, 2012 – Wind energy's contribution of clean power to the country's electricity supply is expected to grow by nearly 20 per cent by the end of 2012, the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) announced today as it kicked off its 28th Annual Conference and Exhibition in Toronto. CanWEA expects new wind energy projects to add almost 1,200 MW of clean energy by the close of 2012. This will mark the second consecutive year with well over 1,000 MW of newly installed capacity, maintaining Canada's position as one of the world's leading wind energy markets.

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) has responded to the release of a report titled ‘Case Study: Diminution in Value, Wind Turbine Analysis’ by Ben Lansink of Lansink Appraisals and Consulting. CanWEA has identified a number of concerns with the study and its conclusions and will be seeking clarification from the author.

“It is neither fair nor appropriate to draw from a single case study the general conclusion that wind energy is directly responsible for significant declines in property value,” said Chris Forrest, vice-president of Communications and Public Affairs. “The fact is the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is not altering property assessments in Ontario as a result of wind energy projects.”

Ottawa, ONTARIO – Oct. 2, 2012 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) reaffirmed the wind energy industry's commitment to respecting and protecting wildlife habitat and the environment in the wake of the release of the Ontario Environmental Commissioner's Annual Report Part II. Indeed, the wind energy industry globally and here in Ontario has a strong track record of partnering with academic researchers, regulators and wildlife organizations to ensure development of wind energy is responsible and sustainable.

Ottawa, ON, September 7, 2012 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) today filed comments with respect to a proposed Health Canada study, "Health Impacts and Exposure to Wind Turbine Noise: Research Design and Noise Exposure Assessment", to be undertaken in collaboration with Statistics Canada.

Ottawa, ON, August 1, 2012 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is issuing a call for a respectful and fact-based dialogue on wind energy after a construction worker on a wind energy project was reportedly threatened with death in West Grey, Ontario, on July 26, by a man armed with a shotgun. There is an active police investigation into the incident.

Ottawa, July 27, 2012 – In response to a proposed national study by Health Canada on wind turbine sound and human health, the American, Australian, Canadian, European, Global and United Kingdom wind energy industry associations point to seventeen reviews of independent research and evidence that all conclude wind is not harmful to human health. According to the wind energy industry associations, wind energy is regarded as one of the safest forms of electricity generation. At the end of 2011 there was 237,669 MW of installed wind energy capacity around the world. Wind energy is a leading source of new electricity globally and is operating in more than 89 countries.

Montreal, July 20, 2012 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) applauds today’s Québec government announcement of a fourth call for tenders for the commissioning of a new 700-MW wind energy block. In issuing this new call for tenders, Québec Premier Jean Charest reaffirms his government’s commitment to renewable energy by seeking to attain the 4,000-MW objective set in its 2006-2015 energy strategy.

Ottawa, July 19 2012 -Calls for a moratorium on wind energy development pending results of a Health Canada study are not warranted because the balance of scientific and medical evidence to date clearly concludes that sound from wind turbines does not adversely impact human health, says the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA).

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) supports the responsible and sustainable development of wind energy in Canada and we continue to monitor ongoing scientific research in the area of wind turbines and human health. Health Canada’s proposed new study will contribute to the scientific literature and our knowledge base.

Vancouver, BC, June 21, 2012 — Wind energy is a cost-competitive and clean choice to supply the significant amounts of new electricity the province will require due to increased industrial development. The cost of developing clean wind energy has dropped significantly in the past three years while technology improvements have increased productivity, an analysis by GL Garrad Hassan has found. The report commissioned by the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) updates older cost and productivity estimates of 121 potential onshore wind development sites across British Columbia that are used by BC Hydro for electricity system analysis and CanWEA hopes this new data can make a useful contribution to the work underway to develop a new Integrated Resource Plan for the province.

Ottawa, March 6, 2012 – A high 78 per cent of Ontarians say wind energy is one of the safest forms of electricity generation according to a recent Oracle Research poll commissioned by the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA). The poll was conducted between February 22-29 and has a margin for error of +/- 3.1 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

Ottawa, Canada, February 8th, 2012 – Canada ranks 6th globally in terms of new installed wind energy capacity and global wind power capacity grew by 21 per cent in 2011, according to annual statistics released by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). The wind industry installed a record level of just over 41,000 MW of new clean, reliable wind power in 2011, bringing the total installed capacity globally to more than 238,000 MW at the end of last year. Today, about 75 countries worldwide have commercial wind power installations, with 22 of them already passing the 1 GW level.

Ottawa – February, 03, 2012 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is encouraged by British Columbia's commitment to "clean and green" power in the province's new natural gas strategy, released today. The Association is concerned, however, that the province is choosing to meet its rapidly emerging new demand for electricity in the short term by increasing its reliance on imported fossil-fuel electricity.

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is extremely disappointed that the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) has called for a suspension of wind energy development at a time when farmers across the province are actively participating in, and seeking to participate in, wind energy developments throughout Ontario. In fact, many of the issues that the OFA has identified as areas of concern are already being reviewed and examined through processes like the Ontario Government’s Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) Review process.

(OTTAWA) Jan. 11, 2012 – Wind energy is playing an increasingly important role in meeting Ontario's demand for electricity, according to the Independent Electricity System Operator's annual release of supply, demand and price data. Total wind energy production rang in at 3.9 terawatt hours TWh – up substantially from 2.8 TWh in 2010. November 2011 marked the highest monthly wind output ever seen in Ontario, with production in that month alone exceeding 0.56 TWh. In annual terms, wind generation represented 2.6 per cent of total output across all fuel types of 149.9 TWh.

Ottawa, December 2, 2011 – Armed with news of record industry growth for 2011, the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) and several key members of the industry will open Monday's trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. 2011 has seen 1,400 MW of new wind energy installations across Canada, with 500 MW installed in Ontario, establishing a provincial record. Canada is expected to end 2011 with more than 5,400 MW of total installed wind energy capacity.

Ottawa, ONTARIO- December 1, 2011 – Wind energy is well positioned to limit huge increases in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) that would result from powering new industrial developments with fossil fuels, according to a new report by the Pembina Institute. The report, GHG Reductions from Enhanced Electrification of Potential New Industrial Demand in British Columbia, finds that clean energy sources such as wind could reduce annual GHG emissions by as much as 8.86 MT CO2eq by 2025 – or the equivalent of converting nearly 2 million passenger cars and trucks into zero-emission vehicles.

Ottawa, Ontario - November 29, 2011 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) opposes Private Members Bill 10 which was introduced in the Legislative Assembly yesterday and proposes to restore municipal bylaw and planning authority as it pertains to clean energy projects. While CanWEA is committed to exploring potential mechanisms to enhance the effectiveness of municipal engagement in such projects as part of the current Feed-in-Tariff program review, the association believes that proposals to change existing legislation will create significant policy uncertainty at a time when investors are seeking stable, long-term policy frameworks to support wind energy development.

Vancouver, October 6, 2011 – Canada's largest renewable energy event wraps up today in Vancouver, BC, following last night's announcement of annual wind energy industry awards. At its gala Awards Banquet, the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) recognized organizations and individuals who have worked tirelessly to advance the Canadian wind energy industry towards a record year of growth in 2011. Awards were presented in four categories: Individual Leadership, Group Leadership, the R.J. Templin Award and the Friend of Wind award. A new award for 2012 was also announced.

Vancouver, October 5, 2011 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) today released a comprehensive guidance document for the planning and development of wind energy projects in Canada. The guide joins a growing list of resources to help lead responsible and sustainable development of wind energy in Canada. Last year the national wind energy association released the industry's first Best Practices in Community Engagement and Public Consultation.

Vancouver, October 4, 2011 – British Columbia can satisfy 17 per cent of its projected electricity demand with clean, affordable wind energy by the year 2025, according to WindVision 2025: A Strategy for British Columbia, a report released today at the Canadian Wind Energy Association's 27th Annual Conference and Exhibition in Vancouver.

Vancouver, October 3, 2011 – Seventy-six per cent of British Columbians strongly agree or agree wind energy should be further developed as a source of clean electricity, according to a recent Oracle Research poll commissioned by the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA). The poll, conducted on Sept. 26 - 27, also found that 84 per cent of British Columbians want the province to produce enough power to meet the needs of residents without importing energy.

OTTAWA, September 26, 2011 – Wind energy in Canada is now on track to enjoy a record year in 2011 with approximately 1,338 MW of new installed wind energy capacity projected to come on line – compared to 690 MW installed in 2010, according to new projections from the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA). These new installations represent almost $3.5 billion in investment and have created more than 13,500 person years of employment in addition to providing emissions-free electricity for families and businesses.

(Ottawa) Sept. 14, 2011: The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) today welcomed news that the majority of Ontario's agricultural regions have enjoyed a significant increase in prices for farm land over 2010 prices. The RE/MAX Market Trends Report - Farm Edition 2011 released Sept. 12 found rising agricultural commodity values and tight inventory levels have contributed to a significant upswing in the price of Ontario farmland in 2011.

Ottawa, July 19, 2011 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) welcomes the decision of the Environmental Review Tribunal to uphold the Renewable Energy Approval (REA) of the Kent Breeze wind project in Ontario, confirming the first project to be approved under the Green Energy Act (GEA) will proceed as planned.

Ottawa, July 6, 2011 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) applauds the recent decision by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (UARB) to take a leadership role in encouraging individuals and communities to invest in generating clean renewable power. The UARB set a price of 45.2 cents/kWh for small wind turbines (50 kW and under) and of 13.9 cents/kWh for larger community wind projects (above 50 kW). This announcement positions the Province of Nova Scotia at the forefront of North America in small and community wind energy projects. Small wind energy systems have a rated capacity of 300 kW or less, and are used to power homes, farms, small businesses and off-grid communities.

Ottawa, July 4, 2011 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) welcomes the announcement today by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) and Ontario Government to offer contracts to 19 new wind energy projects that would add 1,018 MW of new wind energy capacity to the Ontario grid.  Located in the Bruce region and in the area west of London, these new wind projects mean that Ontario’s Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program is now facilitating development of more than 3,175 MW of new wind energy projects to provide clean electricity to power Ontario families and businesses.

Ottawa, ONTARIO-June 7, 2011 – Wind energy developments in Ontario will create more than 80,000 person years of employment and attract more than $16 billion in private sector investments in the next eight years, according to the most comprehensive study ever undertaken on the economic impacts of the wind energy industry in the province. The report, ‘The Economic Impacts of the Wind Energy Sector in Ontario 2011 – 2018’, by ClearSky Advisors, was commissioned by the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) to quantify the projected jobs and economic benefits associated with the rapidly growing wind energy industry in Ontario.

Ottawa, ONTARIO-May 18, 2011 – Ontario’s 2,125 MW of signed contracts for new wind energy developments represent a multi billion-dollar economic opportunity for the province and a chance to create thousands of much-needed jobs. A landmark study of the economic benefits of the wind energy sector in Ontario demonstrates that meeting the wind energy targets identified under the province’s Long Term Energy Plan (LTEP) would result in billions of dollars of private sector investment in the province and the creation of more than 80,000 person-years of employment between 2011 and 2018.  Commissioned by the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) and performed by ClearSky Advisors, a leading independent research and advisory firm, the study is the most comprehensive examination to date of the economic benefits of the wind energy sector in the province.  The study will be released at the end of the month.

OTTAWA, March 3, 2011 — The wind energy industry in Ontario is pleased with today’s Ontario Divisional Court decision to uphold the current regulations for wind turbine setbacks.   The application by Ontario resident Ian Hanna suggested, among other things, that the government did not adhere to their own Statement of Environmental Values (SEV) in developing a setback of 550 metres for the siting of wind turbines.  The Court ruled that set-back distances were established through an extensive public consultation process which considered the views of a wide range of stakeholders and that the Minister did consider the SEV.

OTTAWA, February 15, 2011 — Wind energy is powering Ontario with more clean energy than ever before as production records from the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) show energy production from wind was approximately 6 per cent of total Ontario supply on February 14 – compared to about 1.5 per cent from coal that same day. Earlier this month, wind energy reached a record level for hourly production with 1,296 MW on February 9th.  That’s enough to power more than 300,000 homes with clean, emissions-free energy.

OTTAWA, November 30, 2010 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is pleased to celebrate the arrival and installation of the first domestic content compliant turbines in Ontario under the Feed-in-Tariff program (FIT) at its Pointe-Aux-Roches wind project in south-western Ontario.  The Pointe-Aux-Roches Wind Project is the first wind power project to go to construction under the Feed-in Tariff program and utilizes 100% Ontario steel in its towers. Pointe-Aux-Roches’s turbine towers were manufactured from steel that was processed and fabricated at Essar Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

OTTAWA, October 28, 2010 – Wind energy hit a new all-time record high for hourly electricity output in Ontario on Tuesday, October 26, producing 1,056 MW of power around 9:00 PM that evening according to the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Survey shows Canada’s small wind market has grown 55 per cent over two years

OTTAWA, Oct. 15, 2010 - The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) today applauded the Nova Scotia government for its announcement that the province’s Renewable Electricity Plan will include a Feed-In Tariff (FIT) for small wind systems under 50 kW rated capacity.  This new policy positions Nova Scotia as a Canadian leader in wind energy, and as the first province in Canada to adopt a specific FIT for small wind.  Small wind energy systems have a rated capacity of 300 kW or less, and are used to power homes, farms, small businesses and off-grid communities.  

Ottawa, October 13, 2010 -  The Canadian market for small wind energy systems is growing rapidly according to a new market study conducted for the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA).  The market survey shows that annual sales for small wind energy systems in Canada have grown by 55 per cent over the past two years, despite the global economic downturn.   At the same time, Canadian small wind manufacturing capacity has grown, with Canadian firms now representing over half of the world’s manufacturers of mid-size turbines.  Small wind systems have a rated capacity of 300 kW or less, and are used to power homes, farms, small businesses and off-grid communities.

OTTAWA, July 15 – A new Ipsos Reid poll commissioned by the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) finds that nine in 10 Ontario residents support the production of wind energy in their region of the province for its economic and environmental benefits. The level of support remains high even when respondents were asked if a wind project’s location is within their own community.

Montreal, July 8, 2010 –  The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is pleased to see the number of projects proposed in response to the call for tenders for wind energy from aboriginal or community projects. In the Speech, the government outlined its intention to put in place a new Clean Energy Act that will, among other things, seek to improve energy procurement processes and streamline existing regulatory processes.

OTTAWA, Canada, Feb. 4th, 2010 – The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) today announced that the world’s wind power capacity grew by 31% in 2009, adding 37,500 Megawatts (MW) to bring total installations up to 157,900MW. A third of these additions were made in China, which experienced yet another year with over 100% growth. Meanwhile, Canada’s wind energy industry enjoyed a record year with 950 MW of new wind energy capacity installed in eight provinces – placing Canada 9th globally in terms of new installed capacity for the year. New wind developments represented more than $2.2 billion in investment, increasing Canada’s total installed capacity to 3,319 MW.

OTTAWA, Canada, Jan. 14, 2010 – GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of GE (NYSE: GE), unveiled today a study estimating that renewing a Canadian federal financial incentive that has now allocated virtually all of its funding for wind energy projects would more than pay for itself through tax revenues from the projects’ income, vendors’ profits and individual workers’ wages.  The study estimated that injecting an additional $1.5 billion CDN into Canada’s ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program could spawn 5.2 gigawatts of new wind projects and carry a net present value benefit to Canada’s governments of $287 million CDN.

December 16, 2009 - (Ottawa) – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is encouraged by the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) announcement today regarding the results of the Feed-in Tariff Program’s Launch Application period. The OPA stated in a release today that over 8,000 MWs of new renewable energy projects, 79% of which are wind energy projects, have applied for Feed-in Tariff contracts in the province. Many of these projects are “shovel-ready” and they are poised to deliver jobs and at least $5 billion in investment to Ontario.

OTTAWA, December 15, 2009 – An international panel of experts has released a report based on a review of a large body of scientific literature on sound and health effects, and specifically with regard to sound produced by wind turbines. After extensive review, analysis and discussion, the panel has concluded that sounds or vibrations emitted from wind turbines have no adverse effect on human health.

New RFPs for 500 MW of wind energy will allow Quebec to reach its target of 4000MW by 2015

(Montreal, May 1, 2009) – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) applauds yesterday’s announcement to proceed with the procurement of 500 MW of new wind energy capacity in Quebec and to increase the ceiling price from 9.5 ¢/kWh to 12.5 ¢/kWh in the call for tenders for the purchase of two separate blocks of 250 MW of community and First Nations wind energy projects. CanWEA and its membership had argued the original proposed pricing of 9.5 ¢/kWh was not sufficient to attract or sustain long-term investment.

Ontario’s Green Energy Act seizes the opportunity to create jobs, drive investment and reduce emissions through increased development of renewable energy

(Ottawa) – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) applauded the announcement of Ontario’s proposed Green Energy Act (GEA) tabled today by the Honorable George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. Ontario is currently Canada’s wind leader with 782 Megawatts of installed wind capacity, a figure that will increase to at least 1,200 MW by the end of 2009, powering more than 325,000 homes. CanWEA is confident that the GEA will drive further growth of wind energy in the province and firmly establish Ontario as a North American leader in the development of a new “Green Economy” that creates jobs, drives investment and reduces emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants.

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) today reacted with disappointment to the federal government’s failure to expand and extend its very successful ecoENERGY for Renewable Power Program (eRPP) in the 2009 federal budget. The absence of such action in the federal budget means that federal production incentives for the deployment of wind and other forms of renewable energy will run out of funding to support new projects before the end of the next fiscal year.

CanWEA has submitted its comments to Quebec’s Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune [Department of natural resources and wildlife] as part of the consultations regarding proposed regulations for two blocks of 250 MW of wind energy from Aboriginal and community projects.

On May 5th of this year, the Government of Quebec and Hydro Québec announced that 2,000 MW of electricity would be produced by wind sources in various regions of Quebec. The members of the Quebec caucus of the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) have committed to developing wind farm projects that respect the host communities and have acceded to these Guiding Principles.

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) has responded to comments made by Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach in which he claimed that the recent death of hundreds of ducks on an oilsands tailings pond was insignificant when compared to deaths caused by wind turbines.

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) applauds the announcement of 15 new wind farms, and considers it an unprecedented step for the growth of wind power in Quebec, and for environmental protection. CanWEA believes that this very good news is a harbinger of a bright future for the development of Quebec society and its regions.

The Global Wind Energy Council is forecasting that the global wind market will grow by over 155% to reach 240 GW of total installed capacity by 2012. In its annual “Global Wind Energy Report 2007”, GWEC has adjusted its previous forecast to take into account the unexpectedly strong increase in wind energy deployment around the world. The report will be presented at the European Wind Energy Conference (EWEC) in Brussels on 1 April 2008.

As another global record was set in 2007 with the installation of 20,000 MW of new, emission-free wind power, Canada’s total installed capacity grew to 1,846 MW with the addition of 386 MW of new wind energy projects, its 2nd best year ever. Wind energy now produces enough electricity in Canada to meet the needs of 560,000 homes.

The Global Wind Energy Council today confirmed its earlier estimate that over 20,000 MW of wind power was installed in 2007, led by the US, China and Spain, bringing world-wide installed capacity to 94,112 MW. This is an increase of 31% compared with the 2006 market, and represents an overall increase in global installed capacity of about 27%.
