Did you know?

In general, the wind itself makes more noise than a wind turbine.

CanWEA Seminar Series

Wind, Carbon and other Environmental Markets

Calgary, Alberta
June 16 & 17, 2009

The impact of electricity generation on climate change has recently become a prominent issue in North America. Faced with pressing concerns over global warming and other environmental challenges, both Canada and the United States are increasingly looking to wind energy and other renewable energy sources as a major part of the solution. Today, there are few places in either country where carbon emission reductions or other “environmental attributes” of wind are provided a monetary value either through mandatory or voluntary markets. Experience both in Canada and the United States as well as in other countries has demonstrated that these markets, if well designed, can provide a part of the price signal that serves to “level the playing field” between wind and more traditional forms of electricity generation.

It is widely acknowledged that carbon markets will soon be widespread in Canada and the United States. This provides both an opportunity to improve the fiscal framework for wind and a challenge in ensuring that the market design is effective and equitable. With this in mind, there are many questions for those seeking to assess the potential impact on their businesses: What markets are likely to emerge? What will the prices be? How can wind play a role? How can businesses prepare now for these markets? How does wind play within some of the proposed frameworks in Canada and the US?

This one and a half day seminar, will bring together experts from North America and Europe to examine current and emerging markets that provide wind energy with a value for its environmental benefits, including:

  • Carbon markets through cap-and-trade, intensity based, offset and voluntary systems
  • Renewable energy credits, generated in states and province with renewable portfolio standards (RPS)

The seminar will focus primarily on the financial and market design aspects of this issue, with a secondary focus on policy development. The event will feature high-profile speakers from a variety of perspectives who will share their views and experiences on these, and other topics.

Who should attend?

  • Representatives from the wind project financial community
  • Representatives from large final emitters seeking compliance alternatives
  • Representatives of wind project developers
  • Representatives of governments and policy makers
  • Researchers and consultants providing services to the wind industry
