Did you know?

With wind energy, the cost of electricity is predictable over the long-term because there are no variable and escalating fuel costs.

CanWEA Seminar Series

Wind and Power Systems
Palais de Congrès
Montreal, Quebec
May 20-21, 2009

Wind energy currently satisfies one percent of Canada’s electricity demand. By 2015 this figure is expected to increase to at least 5 percent as the provinces pursue their wind development targets. CanWEA’s recently released WindVision outlines a future for Canada where wind satisfies 20% of the country’s electricity demand by 2025. Achieving these higher penetration levels in the near-term and long-term will present both challenges and opportunities for Canada’s utilities, system operators and regulators.

This one and a half day workshop will bring together representatives of utilities, system operators, turbine manufacturers and service providers across Canada and the United States to discuss challenges and solutions to facilitate higher wind penetration levels across Canada. Participants will learn firsthand about:

  • Current research into wind integration in hydro-dominated and conventional grids, both in Canada and the United States
  • Use of regional coordination strategies, more flexible markets and larger control areas to facilitate wind integration and export
  • Updates on grid code developments across Canada and the U.S. and manufacturer initiatives to meet requirements
  • Developments in reliability requirements and related NERC/ERO initiatives
  • Developments in advanced forecasting tools and methodologies
  • Cold weather considerations for utilities, system operators and manufacturers

The event will feature high-profile speakers from a variety of perspectives who will share their views and experiences on these, and other topics. This promises to be a “not to miss” event!

Who should attend?

  • Representatives of provincial utilities and system operators
  • Representatives of manufacturers and developers active in Canada
  • Representatives of regulators involved in provincial electricity issues
  • Wind project developers and wind farm owners & operators
